New Series Introduction

This new series is subtitled ‘Introduction, Understanding, and Application’ because that is exactly what it does:

  • Introduction- introduces you to new concepts and tools;
  • Understanding- it explains how these concepts and tools can positively affect your life and the life of others you choose to interact with and share your knowledge and experiences.
  • Application- this is where it all comes together, learning and practicing how to make it happen. Applying what you know to make your life better and the life of others around you!

Here is the first in our series.

Four Power Tools

What if in less than 500 words I can give you a gift that can change your life forever, would you read on?

Here it is: Four Power Tools. You already have these tools in your possession and you use them every day. The CHALLENGE is changing these ordinary tools into extraordinary tools! Sounds like a play on words? Yes, it is and it works. What are each of these tools? They are: thoughts, attitudes, words, and actions.

You already possess and use every one of these tools every day. You can change them from ordinary to extraordinary just by the CHOICES you make when using each tool. JUST FOLLOW AND RESPONSD TO THE ENERGY THAT IS GIVEN OFF FROM EACH TOOL AS YOU USE IT. Yes, you can just FEEL the difference and respond, focusing on the energy field being given off in the moment, POSITIVE energy or NEGATIVE energy. If it is not positive, stop! Let go, clear, reframe, re-engage.

Before you stop reading, we are less than 200 words, read on and allow me to elaborate. Much of how we respond to the world around us including how we respond to ourselves is through our Mental Conditioning (habits of thought) and the belief system we have acquired over time (attitudes). These thoughts and attitudes are reflected in how we speak to and about ourselves and others (words), and our behaviors (Actions).

Follow the energy! Negative thoughts, attitudes, and words foster negative actions. Positive thoughts, attitudes, words foster positive actions. This is all about, first, awareness; second, conscious choice (respond not react) to the energy you are feeling about the consequences of your anticipated actions- move forward if positive, stop if negative.

Practice, Practice, Practice!

Before you are in a situation where you have to respond quickly, treat every situation as an opportunity to gain mastery over managing your actions by ‘tuning in’ to your thoughts, attitudes, and words. Stop to listen to your ‘thoughts’ and ‘words’’, FEEL the energy generated by them, and respond accordingly. Is it ‘positive’ or ‘negative’? Sometimes we refer to this as your ‘gut’ reaction. You have heard the saying, “Go with your gut”. Now ask “why do I feel this way?” This exercise above demonstrates how to use reflection, contemplation, action.

Our next session will focus on a tool called RE-FRAMING, a mental process that compliments and supports taking positive actions.

Breaking Down the Barriers to Personal and Organizational Success!

Turbulent, rapidly-changing times dominate today’s workplace.  Around the globe, unstable workforces can be contributed to many factors- mergers, acquisitions, changes in technology, and changes in how we do business.  Large multi-nationals continually survey production capabilities and move manufacturing from one location to another.  Outsourcing of support services from a business’s core competencies is becoming a common practice.  Strategic partnerships and alliances, expanding dominance through vertical supply chains and servicing vertical markets are now in vogue.

Yes, the world of work is different, and therefore our response to it must be different.  No longer does one enter the work force at an early age and chart his/her course based on one’s entrance education, training, and desired future.  Continuous learning is a requirement for employability.  Self-management and self-sufficiency are concepts that apply equally to individuals in the work place, a work unit’s performance, and at the organizational level of an enterprise.  The need and ability to be responsive, adaptable, and resilient are called for in the realm of being competitive and successful in today’s business world.

How do we prepare our children, students, associates, and ourselves for such a work environment?  Is there a set of behaviors and attitudes that can be looked for and, better yet, developed in people who want to compete and succeed?  Can parents, employers, teachers and youth leaders create an environment and culture that attracts, grows, and nurtures such behaviors and attitudes?

The answer to all these questions is a resounding YES!  Not only can leaders create and sustain such a learning environment, we must prepare our youth to be successful to have long-term viability and success in today’s work world.   This series addresses a way to achieve this end both conceptually and practically with models, practices, and tools.

What qualities and characteristics should be developed in individuals in the workplace and in our school environments?  What I am about to describe I refer to as the New Leadership Spirit.  The words leader and spirit are very important!  The word leader connotes self-direction and ownership, as well as the ability to be focused on health and wealth creation. That is to be able to stand back and view the wholeness of one’s decisions and its potential impact before taking action.  It also means to include others that are needed to affect the needed change or who may be impacted by whatever changes will take place. The word spirit means purposeful, passionate, as well as transforming and connected.  These are powerful words!

What are the added dimensions that make this concept NEW?  The newness refers to the need to partner with others and to work in harmony with others. This means not being the lone star putting him or her up against the world! The last characteristic is to be principled-centered.  That is, that you are clear on the few principles that govern your behavior and that you can communicate these principles and have them supported by others.  These are the qualities of a Change Master or a Master Teacher.

Over the past twenty-five years I have worked in the field of behavioral science as a practitioner of performance improvement of individuals, teams, and whole organizations.  The above description of the new leader has been distilled from this experience, especially over the past decade working with Fortune 100 companies like Honeywell and Exxon, as well as medium and small organizations both public and private.  These concepts and models hold true in each of these environments.

“Dr. Bob, what do you do? What is this Organization Development anyway?”, asked Larry

Larry was a computer science engineer assigned to an Office Automation project with me at Imperial Oil Limited. Our challenge was to design a ‘Change Management’ process that would deliver improved performance and savings to the bottom-line. My role was the organization development consultant on the project making a behavioral science contribution to achieving the project objectives.

After working closely together for six months on the project, Larry came to me and said, “Bob, I now know what you do and how you do it!”

I was so surprised with what Larry came up, so simple, so accurate. I would like to share it with you.


This is what Larry called it from what he observed. He then proceeded to define and break the Robert’s Rules on Procedure into the following seven components:

  • Responsiveness- the ability to assess where the client is, and to respond in a manner that indicates a ‘willingness and desire’ to assist. Acts as a partner, accepting ownership for his contribution to defining and achieving objectives.
  • Understanding- brings a knowledge and experience base that adds value in creating meaningful options to both define and achieve desirable objectives.
  • Openness- the ability to be candid, open-minded, and responsive to evaluating options.
  • Trusting- reinforces, enhances an environment consisting of clear agreements and objectives coming from the leadership and supported throughout the organization. Creating a culture of mutual respect and appreciation. One that treats ‘mistakes’ as a learning opportunity rather than blaming.
  • Ownership- accepts responsibilities and accountabilities assigned. Encourages that behavior in others by clarifying expectations; positively recognizing and acknowledging others for their contributions. Addressing potential conflicts early for resolution.
  • Learning- initially and continuously bring a sense of inquiry and fostering the value of learning from our experiences and that of each other. Celebrating breakthroughs!
  • Organization development- focusing on the organization as an open, socio-technical system to be enhanced as an operating entity through clarity of vision and purpose, developing functionality on an individual, team, and organizational levels.

In summary, I found Larry’s framework very helpful in communication to others what I do as an OD Consultant. What is also very unique and clever about his seven components is that the first letter in each component when put together spells RUOTOLO!
