“Dr. Bob, what do you do? What is this Organization Development anyway?”, asked Larry

Larry was a computer science engineer assigned to an Office Automation project with me at Imperial Oil Limited. Our challenge was to design a ‘Change Management’ process that would deliver improved performance and savings to the bottom-line. My role was the organization development consultant on the project making a behavioral science contribution to achieving the project objectives.

After working closely together for six months on the project, Larry came to me and said, “Bob, I now know what you do and how you do it!”

I was so surprised with what Larry came up, so simple, so accurate. I would like to share it with you.


This is what Larry called it from what he observed. He then proceeded to define and break the Robert’s Rules on Procedure into the following seven components:

  • Responsiveness- the ability to assess where the client is, and to respond in a manner that indicates a ‘willingness and desire’ to assist. Acts as a partner, accepting ownership for his contribution to defining and achieving objectives.
  • Understanding- brings a knowledge and experience base that adds value in creating meaningful options to both define and achieve desirable objectives.
  • Openness- the ability to be candid, open-minded, and responsive to evaluating options.
  • Trusting- reinforces, enhances an environment consisting of clear agreements and objectives coming from the leadership and supported throughout the organization. Creating a culture of mutual respect and appreciation. One that treats ‘mistakes’ as a learning opportunity rather than blaming.
  • Ownership- accepts responsibilities and accountabilities assigned. Encourages that behavior in others by clarifying expectations; positively recognizing and acknowledging others for their contributions. Addressing potential conflicts early for resolution.
  • Learning- initially and continuously bring a sense of inquiry and fostering the value of learning from our experiences and that of each other. Celebrating breakthroughs!
  • Organization development- focusing on the organization as an open, socio-technical system to be enhanced as an operating entity through clarity of vision and purpose, developing functionality on an individual, team, and organizational levels.

In summary, I found Larry’s framework very helpful in communication to others what I do as an OD Consultant. What is also very unique and clever about his seven components is that the first letter in each component when put together spells RUOTOLO!

A testimony from a satisfied client

Here is a great example of how I am using Dr. Bob’s service. When I first met Dr. Bob he asked me to do a DISC and other personality tests. I later was asked to do the same by another Eliancer who actually reviewed my results (which were pretty much identical to what Dr. Bob provided to me). She told me how I liked to work with people, what I don’t like…basically nailed the first 55 years of my life. Fast forward to last month. I agreed to accept an assignment with a client who I am helping get her business up and running. I am going to be her CEO until things are running as smoothly as possible. I asked my client to meet with Dr. Bob. She has done the tests and this next week we are meeting with Dr. Bob to make sure we understand each other as best as possible before we truly move forward with our partnership. We intend to do the same with the first two employees we plan to hire in the next couple of months. Furthermore, we intend to work with Dr. Bob to develop our job descriptions to we cull out the characteristics of the people we want as best as possible.

I recommend Dr. Bob and his services to most of my clients at some point in the processes to starting and/or developing their businesses. What he brings to the table is invaluable for the development of true Internal Customer Loyalty on the way to true End Customer Loyalty and ultimately long term business success!

A Framework for defining SUCCESS

As I stated earlier, this framework can be applied to any career choice or enterprise.  For those of you who are already in a career or business, you will know how to have a ‘quick start’ and define success for yourself.

This 7 Step process will help you to address questions critical to your personal and business success.  Draft your responses to this set of questions for each step and make this a ‘living’ document, meaning you will continually revise and update it, as your thoughts develop.

Step 1: Sense of Purpose, Vision, Core Values and Beliefs, and Strategies for life including your career.

  • Why am I selecting this career or business as my personal vehicle for success?
  • What is it about the company, the product, the leadership, the market, and the timing that tells me this is the right and best decision for me?
  • When I look at where I want to be, having been successful through this career, what do I see?
  • What will be my indicators for success- earnings, investments, lifestyle, health, relationships- to name a few?

Describe each one of these indicators in as much detail as possible to make them real and tangible to you.  These will become your guideposts for measuring your success through this business.
